What is “knowledge”?

On facebook I asked the question, “What is ‘knowledge’?”

This is a question which would at first seem so simple, but in today’s world it would appear to be an unknown. I have studied on this for a number of weeks and am still puzzling out the definition and application of this term.

I hope that this turns into a discussion. Add to the comments.  Facebook input is included the  below:

‎”know (ing) there is a “ledge”. 🙂 – lds
Knowledge is knowing, wisdom is acting upon that knowledge. – mkh

Examples of attempts at application, questioning, and definition.

The Bible says “in the beginning, God created”, not in the beginning the goo oozed and then the Big Bang. -tm
The Bible says God formed man out of the dust of the earth and breathed life into his nostrils, not that man evolved from an ape. I don’t even see a mention of ape in the forming of man. -tm

If the fear of the LORD is the “beginning” of knowledge, what is the full acquisition of knowledge? In other words, when does one fully arrive in the knowledge area? -tm
Knowledge is just the acquiring of information unless one FEARS the LORD. -tm

1 Corinthians 13:12 “For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known. ” I think that..Biblically.. the consummation of knowledge will be only when we see Jesus face to face and our sanctification is complete in Heaven. -jk

like that answer…but narrow it to our earthly pilgrimage. -tm
Well, I’m not certain that a person can “fully arrive in the knowledge area” this side of Heaven. “However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come,”(John 16:13) & “All Scripture is given by … See More inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.” (2 Timothy 3:16) I believe that the Word of God is all that God intends for us to know of Himself..this side of Heaven and that any knowledge not seen through the lens of Scripture and exposed by the Spirit will be skewed. Again, I’m not sure we ever “arrive”. Even in Heaven, I don’t think we will ever exhaust all there is to know of our God. As to our earthly pilgrimage, I believe we are to strive to know and enjoy more of Him every single day. -jk

How Do We Get To Wisdom?

There is a logical process by which intellectual thoughts rise from  statistical observations to the level of wisdom.

Data – Data is collected statistical observation or a record of an instance or sequence of experiences.

Information – Information is data that is organized into some kind of form or shape. It must be sufficiently recognizable that one might be able to make meaningful sense of it.

Knowledge – Knowledge is the interpretive view of information. Therefore information plus a world view raises this intellectual concept to the level of knowledge. But if the wrong world view is referenced, the product becomes compromised. True knowledge is information which is evaluated according to the view and perspective of the Creator God. I.e. Are you looking at things according to God’s world view? This is the first manifestation of the proper exercise of intelligence. Proverbs 1:7 “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.”

Understanding – Understanding is the ability to evaluate or separate  knowledge into its qualities. Is it good/bad; true/false; right/wrong; just/unjust; useful/vanity; pure/defiled; or holy/unholy? Proverbs 1:4 “…receive instruction of wisdom, justice, judgment, equity…”

Wisdom – Wisdom is making right decisions which result in right actions which glorify God both as to the process (means) and goals (objectives). These decisions are morally correct.

If one understands the thought process of how to arrive at wisdom, then wisdom is not so hard to achieve. Life can be very straight forward. It is only really difficult when one does not think God’s thoughts after Him.

When is knowledge attained?

Because “the fear of God is the beginning of knowledge,” it can be logically presumed that those who buy into secularism and atheism never rise to the level of knowledge in their work. How can they when there are no absolute foundations by which they might reference their activities. A controlling presumption they hold comes from the principle of that which is random. Value cannot be established by a coin toss unless you believe a superior or outside power orders the outcome of the coin’s informational result.

Proverbs 1:7

Why all the definitions?

Why does the CampusPastor.com web site place emphasis on definitions? There are many pages devoted just to definitions.

Definitions help us to think. Clarity of thought helps us to focus.

  • It helps us to learn.
  • It helps us to know where we should focus attention and identify our work.
  • It helps us to avoid perpetual duplication of research and discovery.
  • It aids in establishing depth of thinking and discovery.
  • It adds an ever increasing breadth and scope to our work and an appreciation of the wonders of creation.
  • It aids in the productivity of our work.

The very concept of definitions are based upon the reality that there is absolute truth. We are in the process of discovery to know what truth is in a particular application. This applies to all disciplines, whether in the physical sciences, sociology, philosophy, or religion.

Your World View Matters!

Others tell you – – – that you have options. It doesn’t really matter. Pick and choose.

But there are really only two options!

One is right.
The others are wrong.

Your Creator has said which to obey.
Your Creator,

  • who is eternal
  • who is almighty
  • who is all knowing
  • who is “the way, the truth, and the life.”
  • who by His very nature and character is the definition of truth and right,

Your Creator who made the world and made you,
gave all of us instructions to follow.
Now he holds all of us accountable to obey them.

The Creator’s world view is the only world view, because He is the Creator. He determined all.

At the time of accountability,
keep in mind,
being He is the omnipresent, omniscient God,
Our Creator keeps accounts, remembers, holds accountable…
He will either reward or He will extend eternal judgment (meaning punishment). Because of who He is, we shall, for a certainty, face Him.

Are you prepared? It is only logical. You need to be.

Is your world view correct?

Have you met your obligation?

Why should the truth set one to falling?

Why should the truth set one to falling? Because truth is defined in eternity to be Jesus, the Creator God. Those who appose Him also appose all that is right, just, verity, and knowledge itself. All this came from Him.

Notice in the verses below, the nature and character of our God. Verse 4 defines his nature. Notice he is both truth and a rock. When one denies truth, their obstacle is the rock. And people wonder why truth should set one falling?

Deu 32:1  Give ear, O ye heavens, and I will speak; and hear, O earth, the words of my mouth.
Deu 32:2  My doctrine shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distil as the dew, as the small rain upon the tender herb, and as the showers upon the grass:
Deu 32:3  Because I will publish the name of the LORD: ascribe ye greatness unto our God.
Deu 32:4  He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.
Deu 32:5  They have corrupted themselves, their spot is not the spot of his children: they are a perverse and crooked generation.

Here is definition of the ways of God, perfection (the flawlessness of the LORD). He is again identified as a rock. In Psalm 18:46 below, the term rock is tied to salvation. The rock can then be that over which one falls or that which is a protection.

2Sa 22:31  As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is tried: he is a buckler to all them that trust in him.
2Sa 22:32  For who is God, save the LORD? and who is a rock, save our God?

And David, later king of Israel said, “Psa 18:46  The LORD liveth; and blessed be my rock; and let the God of my salvation be exalted.

Below is the commentary that people try to enter into the salvation by the “works of the law”. But the Scriptures say one must come by faith. Righteousness is attained by receiving the righteousness extended by the Savior, Jesus Christ. One must go to him – seeking, asking. Jesus extends to the earnest soul that payment of debt for sin which he cannot earn or pay off out of his own strength.

Rom 9:29  And as Esaias said before, Except the Lord of Sabaoth had left us a seed, we had been as Sodoma, and been made like unto Gomorrha.
Rom 9:30  What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, which followed not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith.
Rom 9:31  But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness.
Rom 9:32  Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumbling stone;
Rom 9:33  As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumbling stone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

So the stone which may be the instrument of the fall of some, is also the stone by which one may find solace. He is the one who will either be turned to or he will be the one over whom one will stumble and find their shame and hurt. The end result for the unbelieving, the disobedient is below in Isa 8:15.

1Pe 2:6  Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.
1Pe 2:7  Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,
1Pe 2:8  And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.

Isa 8:13  Sanctify the LORD of hosts himself; and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread.
Isa 8:14  And he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel, for a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
Isa 8:15  And many among them shall stumble, and fall, and be broken, and be snared, and be taken.

Science built on the logical fallacy of induction

(The following comment was made to the article referenced above. It brings up common but frequently relevant objections. In the following reply, I addressed submitted question, as the article does,  “Science not rational?” Perhaps in later commentaries I will address the questioning of God being vengeful, jealous, and regretful as being in conflict with God being love incarnate.)

Science not rational? if we want to bring logic into it, we should note that god is well known to be Vengeful, Jealous (Deut 5v9), and Regretful (Gen 6v6) yet above all things Love incarnate.

Reply to the objection:

This article is interesting because many today are implying that truth is only attained by the rational thinking of man and such thinking is independent of authority. This article says that “science has no logical rational basis.” Please do not think that it says that scientists make no attempt to be logical. It also does not say that they are utterly irrational. It is speaking about the basis of their presumptions.

While the naturalist would imply that he has no absolute truth, he does imply that the adherent to God is absolutely wrong. They imply that whatever truth which may be known is only available by the scientific method, that is the material touchable things perceived by the five senses. But such arguments cannot deal with questions of why, nor deal with even the issues of defining and practicing logic and reasoning.

The article seems to claim that logic can only come from God, an eternal, unchanging God. Logic itself cannot be the result of random chance. Logic and randomness are contradictory in nature. One is specific. The other can never be locked into predictability. Logic is that which emanates out of the very nature and character of God. We are talking about the never changing God. God created man to have a nature to understand and interact with logic and therefore man can be logical.

This article also indicates that Christians have a basis for belief because they have history on their side. They have the declarations, which are recorded, which are preserved, and which are authoritative and logical. The Bible is the prime text of history. Their history and their foundation of logic is based upon the whole of the 66 books of the Bible and upon the revealed character and nature of God, which is impeccably consistent. Many who try to argue against this normally take things out of the context of the whole.

Be sure to keep in mind that a primary claim of this article is that there are presumptions on both sides of the issue. Both presumptions are based in faith. It said, “‘All knowledge is built on ultimate assumptions which cannot be proven directly, but have to be accepted on the basis of faith.’ Thus it is not as we have been programmed to believe, Faith Vs Reason – but rather Faith Vs Faith.”

This article was presented to cause some critical thinking.
