The Grace of God . . . Appeared

GraceOfGod

“For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,”  – Titus 2:11

While the word “grace” is the subject, it is of God. It is a characteristic of God. It is an action of God. It is a gratifying aspect of God’s person. It is the product of the divine influence upon the heart, and its reflection in the life. The result is the expression of gratitude. It is able to bring cheer into the life of man who knows he is condemned in his sin and can find no escape within his own means.

Through grace God brings salvation to the hopeless. God comes to the defense of the creature. He rescues and enables means for his safety. This provision is through His appearance to all men. This speaks of the incarnation of Jesus Christ upon whom the Heavenly Father laid the propitiatory (satisfying) judgment of sin unto all who believe in Him.

Slow Bellies

SlowBellies

One of themselves, even a prophet of their own, said, The Cretians are alway liars, evil beasts, slow bellies.  –  Titus 1:12

One who is slow is characterized as being inactive, that is, unemployed; (by implication) lazy, useless.

The word for belly uses the definition word of gormand which is one who is a greedy or ravenous eater; a glutton. Using the word matrix, it speaks of an extended belly of size such as the womb. It comes from the Greek word gaster from which we might get the word gastric or belly.

While one being characterized such in this may not be visually in such a shape, it must be concluded that their actions and demonstration of duty can easily be so. Here it is implied that service to Christ is more demanding than heeding Jewish fables and following the commandments of men. (vs 14) But a slow belly would rather be gluttonous towards heeding Jewish fables and commandments of men rather than that of God.

Gainsayer Characteristics – Unruly

Gainsayer Unruly

“. . . the gainsayers.
For there are many unruly . . .”
–  Titus 1:10

Characteristics which fail the test of leadership.

The gainsayer is one who is inclined to dispute or refuse the doctrine of truth which is in Jesus Christ. What does it mean that he is unruly?

One who is unruly is unsubdued. He is insubordinate (in fact or temper). Why the description “unsubdued”? People fail to understand that before salvation one is in the slave market of sin. In salvation you are purchased by the blood of Jesus Christ, who died on the Cross to save them from the penalty of sin, to be Sons of God and to live free from sin’s penalty. But the unruly cares not for the Saviour and will not be holy but “reverts” or purposes to remain in the desperate and wicked ways of the world.

The unruly will not be ruled by the pure ways and provisions of a Holy God. He will not learn the doctrine or ways of God. Instead, he is insubordinate in his ways, both to fact (the knowledge of God) and in temper (to moderate or to mix a new life in Christ with holiness).

Insubordinate? Too many people think that if they are in leadership that they are the ultimate authority. All authority comes from God. So failure to be in subjection to His power is to be unruly.

Webster says – Disregarding restraint; licentious; disposed to violate laws; turbulent; ungovernable; as an unruly youth.

To Exhort and Convince the Gainsayers

exhort

Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the
gainsayers.
  – Titus 1:9

A leader needs to be able to call another near, that is to invite, invoke (by imploration, horation or consolation). The purpose of this action is to advise; to warn; to caution. He uses earnest supplication. This is to exhort one.

Just to have another in your hearing is not sufficient. It is also important to convince them regarding doctrine. This body of truth is the Word of God. It is the yard stick by which all is measured. The effort is to persuade or satisfy the mind by this evidence. The objective is to subdue the opposition of the mind to truth.

It is the gainsayer which is the focus of this verse. He is one who is inclined to dispute or refuse the doctrine of truth which is in Jesus Christ. The gainsayer will take the position which is opposite of God. He may be one to lay forth another position, a systematic or set discourse, an unhealthy position, instead of that of sound doctrine.

Ordain Elders in Every City

ordainElders

and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee:”
– Titus 1:5

An elder is a person who is older rather than younger in person, experience, and maturity.  It might be thought of as a comparative description among a group of people. Regarding the church, he would be one who is well instructed and inclined in Godly matters. Clarke suggests that the elder should be able to instruct others, and observe and enforce the discipline of the church.

It is thought that there were nearly 100 cities in the isle of Crete at the time. Paul was likely to have ministered in as many of these as possible to preach Christ crucified and risen. – Clarke With this many communities, it would be important to choose out or ordain leadership so that there would be consistency of holiness.

The following verses describe the character and manner of a good elder.

Set in Order

setinorder

“…that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting,..”
– Titus 1:5

In any locality when there is a possible gathering of God’s elect, there needs to be an organizing for their spiritual welfare. Believers in that place are to become as a body representing the person of Christ. This body needs a head, signifying the importance of leadership and coordination for growth, consistency and protection. This leadership needs to be qualified by certain characteristics.

It is difficult to conceive a reasonable body by seeing a head rolling around a room here, a hand flopping over there, a leg quivering by the chair,  a knee bending by the table, and a foot stomping near the door. A proper body has a connectedness.  The leadership comes from the head and then by the spine. Everything works together in a coordinated fashion. What we see to be normal in life regarding the created physical body is reasonable to presume and observe in the body of Christ.

Anything lacking among believers should be set in order in every city. So in Crete, Paul appointed Titus to go about this task. Paul was in Crete for a short time. Believers were called out, but the work of securing the believers had not been accomplished.
