The Grace of God . . . Teaching us . . . We should live Godly!

“For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly”    Titus 2:11-12

One who lives godly, lives piously.

  • He is referencing and honoring the Supreme Being in heart and in practice of the duties he has enjoined.
  • He is concerned with having due veneration and affection for the character of God.
  • He is concerned with habitually obeying His Commands.
  • He is devoted to the service of God.

Veneration is the highest degree of respect and reverence. Such respect is mingled with some degree of awe; a feeling or sentiment excited by the dignity and superiority of God, the sacredness of His character.

Ordain Elders in Every City

and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee:”
– Titus 1:5

An elder is a person who is older rather than younger in person, experience, and maturity.  It might be thought of as a comparative description among a group of people. Regarding the church, he would be one who is well instructed and inclined in Godly matters. Clarke suggests that the elder should be able to instruct others, and observe and enforce the discipline of the church.

It is thought that there were nearly 100 cities in the isle of Crete at the time. Paul was likely to have ministered in as many of these as possible to preach Christ crucified and risen. – Clarke With this many communities, it would be important to choose out or ordain leadership so that there would be consistency of holiness.

The following verses describe the character and manner of a good elder.

Contrasts between a Godly man and a man of the world.

While many would want to blur the differences between godliness and ungodliness, the Scriptures allow for no such thing. Those who say otherwise are full of twisted thinking and pervert truth.

The godly man will do the following:

  • Be subject to principalities and powers
  • obey magistrates
  • Be ready to every good work
  • speak evil of no man
  • be no brawlers
  • be gentle, showing meekness unto all men

The ungodly man will be known by being:

  • foolish
  • disobedient
  • deceived
  • serving divers lusts and pleasures
  • living in malice and envy
  • hateful
  • hating one another

Now check the characteristics of your life against the above. How will those around you see you? Do you act like a Christian or not? If you cannot be as the godly man, do not be surprised. It means you need to turn to your Creator, receive the salvation which has been provided you in Christ Jesus, and enter into the washing of regeneration and the renewing of the Holy Ghost. Only then will the change take place. All your “good works will not help you. There is only one way of salvation. When you submit to that way, salvation from sin and death will be within your grasp.
