The Grace of God . . . Appeared

GraceOfGod

“For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,”  – Titus 2:11

While the word “grace” is the subject, it is of God. It is a characteristic of God. It is an action of God. It is a gratifying aspect of God’s person. It is the product of the divine influence upon the heart, and its reflection in the life. The result is the expression of gratitude. It is able to bring cheer into the life of man who knows he is condemned in his sin and can find no escape within his own means.

Through grace God brings salvation to the hopeless. God comes to the defense of the creature. He rescues and enables means for his safety. This provision is through His appearance to all men. This speaks of the incarnation of Jesus Christ upon whom the Heavenly Father laid the propitiatory (satisfying) judgment of sin unto all who believe in Him.

Gainsayer Characteristics – Unruly

Gainsayer Unruly

“. . . the gainsayers.
For there are many unruly . . .”
–  Titus 1:10

Characteristics which fail the test of leadership.

The gainsayer is one who is inclined to dispute or refuse the doctrine of truth which is in Jesus Christ. What does it mean that he is unruly?

One who is unruly is unsubdued. He is insubordinate (in fact or temper). Why the description “unsubdued”? People fail to understand that before salvation one is in the slave market of sin. In salvation you are purchased by the blood of Jesus Christ, who died on the Cross to save them from the penalty of sin, to be Sons of God and to live free from sin’s penalty. But the unruly cares not for the Saviour and will not be holy but “reverts” or purposes to remain in the desperate and wicked ways of the world.

The unruly will not be ruled by the pure ways and provisions of a Holy God. He will not learn the doctrine or ways of God. Instead, he is insubordinate in his ways, both to fact (the knowledge of God) and in temper (to moderate or to mix a new life in Christ with holiness).

Insubordinate? Too many people think that if they are in leadership that they are the ultimate authority. All authority comes from God. So failure to be in subjection to His power is to be unruly.

Webster says – Disregarding restraint; licentious; disposed to violate laws; turbulent; ungovernable; as an unruly youth.

To Exhort and Convince the Gainsayers

exhort

Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the
gainsayers.
  – Titus 1:9

A leader needs to be able to call another near, that is to invite, invoke (by imploration, horation or consolation). The purpose of this action is to advise; to warn; to caution. He uses earnest supplication. This is to exhort one.

Just to have another in your hearing is not sufficient. It is also important to convince them regarding doctrine. This body of truth is the Word of God. It is the yard stick by which all is measured. The effort is to persuade or satisfy the mind by this evidence. The objective is to subdue the opposition of the mind to truth.

It is the gainsayer which is the focus of this verse. He is one who is inclined to dispute or refuse the doctrine of truth which is in Jesus Christ. The gainsayer will take the position which is opposite of God. He may be one to lay forth another position, a systematic or set discourse, an unhealthy position, instead of that of sound doctrine.

Contrasts between a Godly man and a man of the world.

While many would want to blur the differences between godliness and ungodliness, the Scriptures allow for no such thing. Those who say otherwise are full of twisted thinking and pervert truth.

The godly man will do the following:

  • Be subject to principalities and powers
  • obey magistrates
  • Be ready to every good work
  • speak evil of no man
  • be no brawlers
  • be gentle, showing meekness unto all men

The ungodly man will be known by being:

  • foolish
  • disobedient
  • deceived
  • serving divers lusts and pleasures
  • living in malice and envy
  • hateful
  • hating one another

Now check the characteristics of your life against the above. How will those around you see you? Do you act like a Christian or not? If you cannot be as the godly man, do not be surprised. It means you need to turn to your Creator, receive the salvation which has been provided you in Christ Jesus, and enter into the washing of regeneration and the renewing of the Holy Ghost. Only then will the change take place. All your “good works will not help you. There is only one way of salvation. When you submit to that way, salvation from sin and death will be within your grasp.

Jesus, by him all things consist

Who is Jesus? (5) ” And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.” Col 1:17 Many people may acknowledge Jesus is God. But if God then your very continued existance happens by His omnipotent continuing work of holding you together. It is part of understanding that he is eternal and alive and working in your behalf right now. Our existance is in His hands present tense. – Campus Pastor

Does this not help us to understand the implications that the heart of the king is in the hands of God? Pro 21:1  “The king’s heart is in the hand of the LORD, as the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will.” Do you think that you, being a man, dare disrespect the will of God any less? There do come days of judgment such as is described in Jeremiah 4:9.

Jesus, Creator of the visible and invisible.

Who is Jesus? (3) “For by Him were all things created,..visible and invisible,..” (Colossians 1:16) In the days of Darwin, they eye was a simple mass of tissue and fluid. Today with microscopes, what was unseen then, is now known to have incredible complexity (energy making machines, roads, trucking devices operating in the cells). In all this we peek at evidence of the infinite foreknowledge of our God.

Jesus Creator of things in earth.

Who is Jesus? (2) “For by him were all things created,.. and that are in earth,..” (Colossians 1:16) As evidence continues to mount that all life is locked within its own kind, or the amazing degree of balance of water, heat and light, or the wide diversity of flora which defies time and chance in its presence, we see the omniscient and omnipotent power of Jesus as God. It causes me to worship with awe.

Who is Jesus?

“Who is Jesus? By Him all things were created that are in the heaven,..”Colossians 1:16 What kind of power is this? What kind of intelligence and forethought does this represent? Consider the massiveness of space involved. It speaks of the size and scope of God. Consider the issue of controlling the heat of stars, their paths, and the gravitational interaction of the pleades. Now THAT is awesome!

Why should the truth set one to falling?

Why should the truth set one to falling? Because truth is defined in eternity to be Jesus, the Creator God. Those who appose Him also appose all that is right, just, verity, and knowledge itself. All this came from Him.

Notice in the verses below, the nature and character of our God. Verse 4 defines his nature. Notice he is both truth and a rock. When one denies truth, their obstacle is the rock. And people wonder why truth should set one falling?

Deu 32:1  Give ear, O ye heavens, and I will speak; and hear, O earth, the words of my mouth.
Deu 32:2  My doctrine shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distil as the dew, as the small rain upon the tender herb, and as the showers upon the grass:
Deu 32:3  Because I will publish the name of the LORD: ascribe ye greatness unto our God.
Deu 32:4  He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.
Deu 32:5  They have corrupted themselves, their spot is not the spot of his children: they are a perverse and crooked generation.

Here is definition of the ways of God, perfection (the flawlessness of the LORD). He is again identified as a rock. In Psalm 18:46 below, the term rock is tied to salvation. The rock can then be that over which one falls or that which is a protection.

2Sa 22:31  As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is tried: he is a buckler to all them that trust in him.
2Sa 22:32  For who is God, save the LORD? and who is a rock, save our God?

And David, later king of Israel said, “Psa 18:46  The LORD liveth; and blessed be my rock; and let the God of my salvation be exalted.

Below is the commentary that people try to enter into the salvation by the “works of the law”. But the Scriptures say one must come by faith. Righteousness is attained by receiving the righteousness extended by the Savior, Jesus Christ. One must go to him – seeking, asking. Jesus extends to the earnest soul that payment of debt for sin which he cannot earn or pay off out of his own strength.

Rom 9:29  And as Esaias said before, Except the Lord of Sabaoth had left us a seed, we had been as Sodoma, and been made like unto Gomorrha.
Rom 9:30  What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, which followed not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith.
Rom 9:31  But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness.
Rom 9:32  Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumbling stone;
Rom 9:33  As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumbling stone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

So the stone which may be the instrument of the fall of some, is also the stone by which one may find solace. He is the one who will either be turned to or he will be the one over whom one will stumble and find their shame and hurt. The end result for the unbelieving, the disobedient is below in Isa 8:15.

1Pe 2:6  Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.
1Pe 2:7  Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,
1Pe 2:8  And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.

Isa 8:13  Sanctify the LORD of hosts himself; and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread.
Isa 8:14  And he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel, for a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
Isa 8:15  And many among them shall stumble, and fall, and be broken, and be snared, and be taken.
