The Aged Women – That the Word of God be not Blasphemed

Word of God be Not Blaphemed

The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;  That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.
–  Titus 2:3-5

The frame of mind and the personal action and activities of women play a significant role with regard to the public reputation of the Word of God. These seemingly short three verses impart a lot of responsibility.

Blaspheme is defined as an action which will vilify. It is to specifically speak impiously. It comes from a word which is to be scurrilous.

scurrilous is to hinder by saying something or use of rumor. By implication it is to destroy the fame of another.

Impious is to be irreverent towards God and what He has done. It is wanting in veneration for God and his authority; irreligious; profane. It suggests that one is a scoffer at God and His authority and His written Word.

To vilify is to make vile; to debase; to degrade. Slander may be a vehicle to accomplish this purpose. They do those things which  defame God.

The Steward of God

StewardofGod

“For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God;”  – Titus 1:7

This is an important standard for Christian Leadership. A steward is an overseer of something. In this case it is the church. He is the physical agent of its treasure, born again believers assembled. He is the manager of the affairs of the church. In this case he is the one who oversees the family of God with regard to what is available to eat and that they receive sufficient for their health. In this case he helps manage that they eat and what they eat regarding the Word of God. It is the Word of God which is to be their nourishment. For this reason his activity of stewardship is related to his duty of preaching the the gospel.

If one is a steward over a farm, he is responsible that the animals do not wander away and get into danger. He is to manage watchful care over their health and well being. If he is a steward of a house, he is responsible for its management and upkeep.

Blameless is also defined here by the word “as.” This is a comparative term which brings the bar of quality to the level of holiness. God is the standard and also clearly implied as being the employer. God is the one to whom responsibility is required. The standard is absolute. The level and manner of accountability is specific. Any activity of stewardship is supervised by God.
